At 19-years-old, Sydney Delong is like many people her age. She’s tired of school after her freshman year studying psychology at Ryerson University, she works part time at The Body Shop, and she is trying to find individuality on her own path. What sets her apart is her voice, which allowed her to preform in internationally recognized music festivals Canadian Music Week and NXNE.
Machine Girl, the Brooklyn-based producer, has reached deep within herself to extract defused musical formations. Her brooding style of darkstep drum and bass proves noisily to be a concoction of the inner circles of hell. The music is the fuel of nightmarish images that you never want to wake up from.
Hannah Cohen has emerged into the pop stream with a sense of truth and vulnerability. Her genre of sad tunes glued together with sweetly-strung jazz bits mould her music’s sound. With her debut hit Child Bride, Cohen configured a statement through anthems of despair. On her new album, Pleasure Boy, Cohen walks with a similar stride as she improves her dynamicity.
With a frantic, headbanging, hard partying sound, Acid Priest has already made an impact on the local Toronto music scene. The four-piece band hailing from Stouffville, Ontario has been around for less than a year and already they’ve accomplished feats that bands take years to do. Their first LP, Outta Control, was released in mid January, in March they toured southern Ontario with Ottawa locals Old Rules, and now on May 7th they’re playing alongside Monster Truck for Canadian Music Week.
On April 4th, 2015, I made my way to Ottawa’s well established jail-turned-hotel. Located across from the Rideau Centre, the Ottawa Jail Hostel’s haunting shadows lurked over the city streets. I walked around to the back of the building, through an eerily quiet parking lot, and to a dead end. Confused, I spotted a man outside one of the back entrances.
Spawning from the forever-clustered island of Montreal, Airick Woodhead (aka Doldrums) has set himself up for stardom. With his sophomore album, The Air Conditioned Nightmare, arriving in stores April 7th, the progression in his songwriting has become an elaborate business, increasing dramatically since he first began in the music industry. The Air Conditioned Nightmare is a mishmash of several stylizations, ranging from brooding industrial beats (“Hotfoot”) to slow-burning glitch pieces (“Video Hostage”).
