Disclosure had a strong 2012, but 2013 is already looking like it’ll be the young British duo’s year. The electronic, post-dub producers have unleashed a killer track titled “White Noise.” The song is a collaboration with fellow up-and-comers AlunaGeorge, a British pop/electro duo who have an amazing track record with their releases thus far, including “Your Drums, Your Love,” “Body Music” and “Watching Over You.”
R&B is an ever-expanding and changing genre, especially in 2012… if you’re a man. Frank Ocean, Migeul, and The Weeknd all rose to higher notoriety and famethanks, in part, to their minimalist beats and crisp falsettos. They brought fresh sounds and perspectives and reinvigorated the likes of Usher, with “Climax” being a direct result of the Weeknd and Drake.
A new breed of sex, r&b, and indie releases has been forming in music. The Weeknd has become the fully-developed realization of this new breed; an r&b singer’s lush voice over the sparse and innovative sounds that reference indie electronica and rock. Little is known about the man behind The Weeknd, except his name is Abel Tesfaye, with production by Jeremy Rose, Illangelo and Doc McKinneh.
One of the most fascinating and talented members of Odd Future, Earl Sweatshirt has already formed a mythology in hip hop culture thanks to his boarding school exile after the release of his first album. Sweatshirt is by far one of the strongest rappers in Odd Future, working on his talent like Frank Ocean does on his singing, or Tyler the Creator does on crazy productions.
Frank Ocean’s debut album, channel ORANGE, is an artist falling into a surreal world of love, riches, drugs, and sex (not to be confused with love). The journey taken is purposeful on the album, as Frank weaves together each song with interludes and soundbites from films. The album is a whole, thanks in part to this effort, but also because of the surreal world’s direct placement inside the singer’s fascinating mind.
