With Cinco de Mayo around the corner, there’s no question that tequila from all over the world will be consumed in vast amounts. Due to its potency, you must ensure that you drink and choose your tequila wisely. When choosing your tequila for this festive weekend, it’s very important for you to choose a brand that is guaranteed to please the palate of anyone who drinks it straight up, or in one of your favourite cocktails. As an extremely particular drinker, who feels that his palate deserves the best, the tequila I am very happy to recommend to you for cinco de mayo and beyond is Patron’s Reposado.
Many of you may have tried Patron’s excellent silver brand of tequila, but as it is with all tequila’s, the longer the tequila is aged, the smoother and more complex the flavouring will be. When it comes to the flavour of the reposado, it is a blend of the smooth characteristics of the Patron Silver, and the ultra complex flavouring of the Anejo. It is aged in oak barrels for 2 months, and when you sip the reposado, you can detect traces of the oak in the finish. As it is with most tequila, one of the major flavours that the reposado has been paired with is citrus which lends to how smooth the reposado feels when you taste it. When I sampled the reposado, it tasted as though I was drinking patron with the perfect amount of squeezed citrus zest that we rely on to smooth out the bite that lesser tequila’s carry. This is without a doubt one of the best flavour combinations in any tequila on the market.
After sipping the Patron Reposado, you may be thinking of a nice margarita cocktail to create. While most bartenders use a liquor pairing of tequila and triple sec (grand mariner and cointreau are also good alternatives), the good people at Patron have managed to create a new orange liqueur called Patron Citronage which from my experience creates one of the smoothest margarita’s in the game. The citronage has a smooth velvety texture similar to an ice wine that allows you to sip the liqueur on ice or in a small rocks glass. If you’re trying to enjoy a nice buzz to help you relax, the percentage sits right at 40%, unlike most flavoured liqueurs that sit at 30 or 35%. One great tip I might add to help you enjoy the Citronage to its fullest is that if you enjoy cooking with alcohol, the Patron Citronage is an excellent choice to add the flavour of premium oranges to any sauces or desserts. Is your mouth watering yet?
When I created the margarita, I used very precise measurements to ensure balance and flavouring. I also wanted to use fresh ingredients as opposed to artificially flavoured juices to maximize how smooth and refreshing the margarita could be. Here are the simple ingredients for you to try at home.
[note color=”#00f4ff”]1 oz of Patron Reposado
1 oz of Patron Citronage
1/2 of a whole lime squeezed
1/2 of a whole lemon squeezed.
Shake on ice, and strain into a margarita glass.
[/note]The combination of orange, lemon, and lime citrus, with the velvety texture of the Patron Citronage, and the oaky complex flavour of the patron reposado is something that I have added to my repertoire for when I entertain at home.
To close, it is important to note the amount of care that goes into Patron’s products to make them as smooth and flavourful as they are.
It takes 60 hands.
Watch the video below, and you’ll know exactly what I mean. Happy Cinco De Mayo everyone, enjoy it responsibly!
