An Interview with Thomas Gold

And he’s not the only one that’s house music obsessed. In the past decade, North America has seen a transition from hip-hop to electronic music. From sold out electronic music festivals to collaborations between pop artists and DJs, the rising popularity of electronic music is undeniable. Thomas offers his insight on the phenomenon and says that “maybe it was just a question of time”.

“In Europe, we don’t call it EDM. It’s just house music and it’s been there for quite a while. Now you can see it in North and South America as well; it’s growing much faster than it used to in Europe and I think it was just a matter of time before this would happen. I would say people love music and that is how this whole EDM thing evolved. Putting together pop and underground stuff work together and the good thing is here in North America, people are really open to anything. You can mix genres and you can mix pop artists with house producers. And these big collaborations help a lot, they open the door to bigger audiences and that is why all the festivals are exploding right now, shows are sold out and so many people are just going crazy for all this music. I mean, there is nothing better than for us DJs to see that and I hope it’s going to last a long time. I’m excited to see how it goes and what’s coming next because it’s getting bigger and bigger and there is so much potential left…It is taking over the world now and it had to happen. Let’s hope it will last for a long time.”

thomas-gold-5Aspiring DJs hope the electronic wave is here to say and Thomas offers his insight and advice on how to make it in the industry. “It’s a lot of work and many people don’t see it really. I work every day and every night on the plane, at the airport, at the hotel” says Gold. His advice for hopeful producers and DJs is to “take your time, do your own thing and try to find your own personal signature, style or sound.” Thomas also warns of the pitfalls and vigorous work ethic needed. “You have to do it every day, every single hour and you have to be passionate about what you’re doing…do what you love and put all your energy into it.”

“It’s worth the wait,” Thomas emphasized during our time together. Attending his show after our interview made me understand exactly what he meant.

The venue is packed with throngs of people dancing, singing and having the time of their lives. Thomas is dancing just as vigorously on stage with his arms up in the air and the biggest smile. His music flows through everyone, creating a connection between fans and artist. The experience is unlike any other and you can see Thomas soaking every bit of it in.

“Sometimes it may take a bit of time but in the end it’s amazing. I’m happy and I’m so lucky to be where I am now and to be what I’m doing. It’s worth the wait.”
