Kelis has finally returned after the buzzing electronic of ‘Flesh Tone’ (released in 2010) with a whole new sound once again. Her sixth studio album is titled ‘Food’. It’s a soulful and lively affair produced by TV On The Radio’s Dave Sitek, who has also produced for the likes of Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Santigold. Kelis’s label refereed to the album as having ‘a sound that’s rootsy without ever being self-consciously retro, that pitches live horns and gospel-y organ against electronics’.

The first single is the previously leaked ‘Jerk Ribs’ is a driving and melodic piece of music full of classic horns but still feeling fresh and organic. ‘Rumble’ is the second single to be released in March. If the original track is just slightly too retro for your modern ears, check out the Mount Kimbie remix posted above, the spacey funk remains authentic to Kelis while setting the perfect vibe for an after-hours lounge.

‘Food’ is to be released on April 22nd and is available for preorder now on iTunes.
